Anesthetics have been used for thousands of years. In fact, the first use of anesthetics, in fact, in the “pre-history era, an era of human history before the written text.
Initially the use of anesthetics herbal:

In the pre-history, are herbal in nature anesthetics. Poppy is known to have been harvested in 4200 BC, and these plants were first cultivated in the Sumerian Empire. The first use of anesthetic preparations containing opium in 1500 BC and 1100 BC, civilization in Cyprus and elsewhere have been farming and harvesting of plants.

Poppy was introduced in India and China in 330 BC and 600 AD to 1200, respectively. Other anesthetics based plants have been used in China during this period. In the second century, the Chinese physician Hua Tuo was known to have used a derivative of cannabis anesthesia for abdominal surgery.

In Europe, the Americas and Asia, several other “Solanum species of plants were used as anesthetics, including mandrake, henbane, and several species of Datura. Each of these contains a potent tropane alkaloid. In the classical Greek and Roman times, leading figures such as Hippocrates and Pliny the Elder noted the use of opium and Solanum plants. In the Americas, the leaves of coca (which is a derivative of cocaine) is often used anesthetic. It was followed by Inca shamans who chew coca leaves and then spit on the wounds to administer a local anesthetic.

Anesthetics herbal of this type are widely used for many centuries, however, are not without drawbacks. One of the main problems with the use of anesthesia herbal is in the right doses very little, it has no effect, and too often the patient’s death. Standardization of anesthesia was difficult but was achieved to some extent, before the nineteenth century by the categorization of anesthesia based on where the plants were grown anesthetic.

The discovery of morphine:

In 1804, a German pharmacist named Friedrich Wilhelm morphine extracted from opium, and the compound known Morphium “, the Greek god of sleep and dreams. However, morphine has not been widely used for almost fifty years. In 1853, the needle has been developed and because of this new mode of administration, use of morphine has increased significantly. Morphine is widely used as an anesthetic.

In 1874, a derivative of morphine called diacetylmorphine-known as the heroin was developed. Almost twice as potent as morphine, heroin was marketed by Bayer for a short period, from 1898. However, it was only 16 years later, in 1914, that possession of morphine, heroin, cocaine and was banned without a prescription in the United States because of the strong dependence of these substances.

Inhalation anesthetics:

Oral and inhaled anesthetics have been used traditionally by Muslim anesthetists, and use of these preparations is well known in the Islamic empire. Hundreds of surgical operations were carried out using drug-soaked sponges prepared, is placed on the face of people undergoing surgery.

In the Western world, the development of inhalation anesthesia, using sterile surgical techniques developed by Joseph Lister was one of the main keys to success of surgery in the nineteenth century.

During the nineteenth century, both carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide were used for experimental surgical procedures. Although the use of carbon dioxide anesthesia never became popular, the nitrous oxide in fact widely used.

Anesthetic properties of nitrous oxide is first noted by Humphry Davy, British chemist, in an article published in 1800. However, only several decades later, in the 1840s that nitrous oxide has been widely used. One of the first uses of gas for the extraction of the tooth without pain was achieved by an American dentist William Thomas Green Morton in 1846.

During the same decade, an inhalation anesthetic, also known as diethyl ether was used to extract the tooth. Diethyl ether was synthesized by the German doctor Cordus Valerio in 1540, but it was not until the 1840s that the first public demonstration of the use of ether product. A decade earlier, in 1830, chloroform was also developed. This has become more popular in Britain, but even then, the dangers of ether and chloroform was observed.

Anesthetics:
Modern anesthetic agents are of two types: general and local anesthetics. Local anesthetics are substances such as lidocaine and procaine. The work of preventing the transmission of nerve impulses in the area where anesthesia is administered. General anesthetics, in contrast, are more similar to that of nitrous oxide in its method of delivery and, in fact, this inhalation anesthesia is still in use. Inhalation anesthetics are usually FLUOROCHEMICAL (isoflurane, sevoflurane and desflurane) have much lower for the flammability of diethyl ether, which are much safer to use in the operating room.
